It's the last workshop for this school year's Paaralang Co-op, and we will be playing games! Some of them will test your Pinoy vocabulary via Pictionary or Hangman, and some will test how limber you are, as you jump over hands in luksong-tinik, or transfer that rice-filled square in Chinese jackstones.

Join us this Sunday, March 15, 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Brisson Room of St. Joseph's Center at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Vienna.
After only three workshops this school year, Paaralang Pinoy has discovered already some talented individuals who love sharing their Filipino heritage to our young people. And together with these Kuya, Até, or Tita, the kids have found their Fil-Am community in the midst of Northern Virginia.

Parents are always a part of this co-op model of teaching kids, and in Paaralang Pinoy, our parents assist in the workshops. We follow a curriculum that provides the framework for our lessons but the experiences and stories of our elders add depth to the conversations.

Some have visited the Philippines recently, and are able to share their experiences. Some have visited the towns and provinces in our lessons, and add local color to our subjects. And our second-generation parents who grew up away from their Filipino heritage learn alongside their children!

Occasionally, we find a Tita or Lola or Kuya who belong to the local Filipino community, and who love to share their time and talent with Paaralang Pinoy! They are not related to anybody in the class but will join us on a Sunday afternoon to teach the Cariñosa dance or to sing Dungawin mo Hirang as an example of a kundiman!

You can also become a part of this community. We have two more workshops in the school year, and your support--maybe your singing voice or dancing feet, knowledge or fluency in a local language or dialect, vacation experience at one of our famous Philippine beaches, perhaps you have a bibingka and puto recipe--are welcome in Paaralang Pinoy!
Our children, when they grow up and look back, will remember your stories and your presence fondly and with deep appreciation. In fact, they may even come back to share their teaching talents with the younger ones!
They were only helping their mouths form the short vowel sounds in the Filipino alphabet. Before long, they can see a Filipino word and their mouths will know instinctively how to read and pronounce correctly!

Paaralang Co-op may not teach your children to speak fluently but they will learn much more than vocabulary to spice up their conversations with sige, salamat, or sa uulitin! They will find other kids, who also feel comfortable eating with a spoon and fork, who love pastillas made from carabao's milk, and who will bring their elder's hand to forehead as a sign of respect.

At our first workshop this fall, we reviewed some basic words of introduction, familiarized ourselves with the map and flag of the Philippines, and listened to Ang Pagong at ang Matsing while munching on Skyflakes Condensada.

At our second workshop, we continued the lessons with a Tour of Luzon, a short history of the Philippine flag and its revolutionary beginnings, and of the Barong Tagalog, and finally learning about the manongs from California with a story about Lakas and the Manilatown Fish.

But under the trees and shade of Shelter A in Nottoway Park, the families who joined us had a blast playing tumbang preso and agawan base; the prowess of the titas in sungka were challenged by the kids; and with a bit of Filipiniana music, the dance genes of Pinoys were in full display!
Through classes, workshops, and various celebrations, we raised a generation of first- to fifth-graders into high school- and college-aged kids, who appreciate and value their parents' heritage and traditions.

But we don't want to stop there. Paaralang Pinoy is dreaming big, and moving forward with a new set of programs to serve the Filipino-American youth.

PP Music Program teaches and exposes our youth to Filipino church hymns, traditional folk songs, and Original Pinoy Music (OPM). Included in this program is a Family Choir that assists in the monthly Filipino Mass and the annual Simbang Gabi with the Bishop.

PP Cultural & Arts Program focuses on instruction in the different folk and ethnic dances, and in the modern interpretation of traditional dances. This program allows our youth to represent the Filipino culture in dance performances.

Paaralang Co-op Program consists of parents working together with teacher-volunteers in sharing the Filipino culture to their children, and includes storytelling sessions, demonstrations and workshops, and conversation practices. Though geared to rising 1st to 5th graders, older children are given tasks, and earn community service hours for their assistance.

PP Youth Group prepares our Filipino-American youth to lead the larger Filipino community in American society, and includes leadership formation seminars, mentoring sessions, and educational field trips to Fil-Am events.

We will be launching these programs on September 15, 2018, the celebration of the Feast of Filipino martyr, San Lorenzo. Join us for 7:00 p.m. Mass and the reception that follows at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, and find out more about what's new with Paaralang Pinoy.
Paaralang Pinoy welcomed autumn in Virginia with a series of Fall Classes for our local Filipino-American youth. There was a little bit of everything each Sunday: some Filipino words and phrases, some video clips, books and music, and of course, a taste of Filipino and Asian snacks after all that work.
We always sing the Lupang Hinirang at the start of class, and even without knowing all the words, the children are now familiar with the melody. They even learned of Julian Felipe's influences in composing the anthem, comparing portions of it to the national anthems of Spain and France, and to Verdi's famous opera, Aida.

One of our more creative classes made us into Filipino architects. Using the book, What Kids Should Know About Philippine Architecture, we learned about homes, malls, even cemeteries, and created our version of a Gabaldon schoolhouse.

Kasaysayan, or history, that huge topic that we couldn't have covered in a year, much less in one lesson, was a quick view of Philippine independence. After learning of the influences to our flag's design and looking at the coat of arms that King Phillip II granted to the city of Manila, we created our own coat of arms.
Christmas traditions will be our last lesson for the Fall Classes. It promises to be another fun class with a little something to do, a little something to eat, and whole lot of immersing ourselves in Pinoy culture.

If you're interested in making your own traditional parol, join us on Sunday, November 29 at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Vienna, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. You will be provided with a complete kit of tools for making your own Christmas Star. A donation of $15 is requested.

The Fall Classes will have eight sessions from October 4 to November 22, 2015. Each session will include an introduction to the Filipino language and a culture lesson. The students will either work in class or take home worksheets that reinforce the lessons. Next year, we will bring you our Slice of Pinoy Spring Workshops for Kids which will feature a short review of the relevant culture lessons learned in the fall followed by an activity such as cooking or dancing or creating crafts.

Our Ate and Kuya helpers will continue to lead our littlest students at our Saling-Pusa Station using the same topics but geared to our preschoolers. If you register a preschooler, a parent or guardian is welcome to stay for the duration of the session.

All our classes and workshops will be held on Sundays from 3:30-5:00 p.m. at the St. Joseph's Center of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, 8601 Wolftrap Road, Vienna, VA.

Registration for our Fall Classes is now OPEN for your rising 1st to 5th graders. Tuition for Fall Classes is $10 per student per class or if you choose to enroll for the entire series of Fall Classes, we offer a discounted tuition of $64 per student if paid in full on the first day of class. Registration and other forms will be emailed after you sign up.
We at Paaralang Pinoy love to end the year with a party, and what better way to pass on the Pinoy way of celebrating than to hold a Fiesta Workshop!

Some of our students have been with us since they were barely able to write their own names. Attending year after year had given them an appreciation of their heritage, a repertoire of Filipino folk songs, and dance skills! Those flapping arms imitate ducks quite well that the rest of the class easily pick up the steps.
For the Saling-Pusa kids, banging out the song and dance rhythms--from the beat of the northern mountain regions to the danza of the harana, and the fast and furious bamboo claps of the southern regions--is half the fun of celebrating. And for the Paaralang Pinoy teachers, feeling the Pinoy rhythm is already half the lesson about being Pinoy.
We end another year of Paaralang Pinoy workshops, and of passing on bits of Pinoy stories and songs to our Filipino-American children. If you are interested in joining us for the school year 2015-2016, watch for announcements in this blog, or email us directly at paaaralang.pinoy at yahoo dot com. We look forward to meeting you soon.Gurohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11933567068299297948noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6802121251920317043.post-6590460142203645222015-03-22T17:01:00.000-04:002015-05-15T17:08:14.181-04:00Jack en Poy!

The Street Games Workshop is the hands-down favorite of all the kids who've participated in Paaralang Pinoy's classes. They get to take off their shoes, scream out, and at the end of all that fun, eat street food. This year, we served them banana-cue!
The Saling-Pusa kids weren't left out of the fun either. There were paper balls to use for sipa, tiny shells for sungka, and their own version of Chinese garter.
Tumbang-preso is the kind of game that lends itself to variations. The kids get into it enough to modify it and come up with their own rules.
The gymnasts in our class were in the air literally, showing us the different ways to go over the elastic stretched across the room. But Chinese garter required more dainty and accurate feet, to finish the patterns without missing a beat.

Maybe years from now, when their gadgets' batteries are low and these kids are feeling bored, they might remember that it doesn't require much to have fun. A 3-yard length of elastic can entertain them as well as any video game.Gurohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11933567068299297948noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6802121251920317043.post-52960001062741025222015-01-23T12:31:00.000-05:002015-05-15T17:08:23.523-04:00Palay, Bigas & Kanin

We introduced our workshop topic, Bigas o Kanin? with a popular tune, Magtanim ay di Biro. But wouldn't you know it, the composer also created many other songs that our students knew! So with the help of our student teachers, we had a belated caroling session singing the popular medley, Pasko na Naman and Noche Buena, both composed by prolific composer and National Artist, Felipe Padilla de Leon.
Yuko! and Ate happily obliged, showing our saling-pusa kids the action words from our song of the month. Later, with the help of their noisemakers--little plastic eggs filled with (what else?) bigas, they demonstrated tayo! upo! and yuko! to the big kids in class.

We had puto for merienda, quite appropriately
showing the many things made from rice to our kids. But many lessons
are remembered better when the hands are involved, and as a bonus, if
these same hands make something edible and yummy. Perhaps you can guess
what we made and ate that afternoon?
The annual Parol-Making Workshop held at Our Lady of Good Counsel has become a tradition to many Filipino-American children in the northern Virginia area. Many have kept the parol, or star lanterns that they've created each year. Others have given these parol kits to others as a way of sharing their Filipino culture to American friends.

Years from now, these children may remember that making a parol is part of their Advent preparation, together with attending Simbang Gabi and eating at a salu-salo every night for the nine days before Christmas. Paaralang Pinoy is proud to contribute to their memories and help them discover ways to share their culture.Gurohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11933567068299297948noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6802121251920317043.post-15985528107162849052014-11-27T20:39:00.003-05:002014-11-27T20:39:35.585-05:00Bahay Kubo

This month, we learned about some of the Chinese and Spanish influences on Filipino culture by way of Bahay Kubo. After all, singing helped them practice their short vowel sounds and introduced them to words like bawang, sibuyas and kamatis, the basic ingredients of many culinary creations.

There was little bit of history too as we displayed a Maria Clara outfit, common during the Spanish period, and a camisa chino, a shirt revised to fit the weather and needs of the Filipinos then.
In the Saling-pusa Station, our preschoolers continued to learn the rest of Bahay Kubo with a picture book, and color the Philippine flag using their new words: bughaw, pula, dilaw and puti.
Though we don't have a workshop scheduled in December, Paaralang Pinoy is co-sponsoring a Parol-making workshop on Sunday, November 30 at Our Lady of Good Counsel's De Sales Hall at 2:00 p.m. Do join us and listen to Filipino carols sung by former students of Paaralang Pinoy as your children create their own parol.

Paaralang Pinoy opened this year's workshop series with a birthday party! Our theme was Maligayang Bati: Pinoy Etiquette and Manners but we were fortunate to have a new student celebrating her birthday and the class was able to sing for her, in Filipino!

You would have heard chants of A-E-I-O-U, spoken like true Filipinos, from our new group of kids. There were also strains of Lupang Hinirang, which we will continue to learn and practice through all the workshop sessions. The children also learned the correct way to display the Philippine flag, and a general idea of how the country's many islands look like.

Our Saling-Pusa kids colored the flag and traced the names of the islands. But learning about manners and etiquette cannot be done with just pencil and paper! They got up to show respect to elders, touching hand to forehead and saying Mano po! They also practiced those short vowel sounds in Magandang hapon po! and Paalam po!

But birthday parties aren't complete without frosted cupcakes so after singing Maligayang bati!, they sat down to a birthday snack to end their first workshop with Paaralang Pinoy.
Colorful buntings transformed our generic space into fiesta central and set up the stage for teaching our kids about summer celebrations in the Philippines. Tinikling was the first order of the day sans real bamboo poles. Nevertheless, the kids still worked up a sweat as they pretended to keep their feet safe while dancing with grace and energy.

Since many fiestas occur during the summer months, we simply had to introduce our kids to exotic summer fruits that they may not encounter at the local groceries: guyabano, atis, lansones. They also learned how to address the many relatives they will meet at the fiestas. You should have seen the pleased looks of our guests when a two-year-old boy called out to them: lolo! lola!

The kids had a bit of rest between strenuous games with a game of marbles, called holen. Those daliri found new skills in them, and a few of the kids were naturals! We could have moved on to a game of teks after that workout.

It's summertime in the Philippines right now and many are celebrating their patron saints' feast days with Flores de Mayo and Santacruzan processions. Most homes are busy with cooking and baking, and doors are wide open for visitors. At street corners, there are temporary wooden stages for talent shows and performances. We won't have that here in cold and wet Virginia but through our A Slice of Pinoy workshop series, which ends in April with Mamiyesta Tayo!, a Fiesta Workshop, the kids will learn how the Filipinos prepare to party.
